Weekend Rides and PMC Update #08: Clev and I set out to do another 50 miles on Saturday, same route as last week. This week we had Dom with us and another guy from Xaverian, class of '74, and this guy could ride. Like I said, the route was the same, but the wind was kicking up and made it much harder, though we still managed to beat last weeks time by about 5 minutes. I think the plan is to do 2 or 3 more 50 mile ride before we kick it up a notch. Just one quick thing for all your motorists out there....please don't honk at people on bikes. We got honked at 4 times during our ride (all 4 times by female drivers, I might add). Listen folks... there is no need to honk the horn. We know you're there and the only thing it does is potentially scare the crap out of us. We're supposed to follow the same rules of the road on the bike as do cars...so do you honk the horn at a car every time you pass them? I didn't think so.
So I tried one of these "GU" energy gel things last week and now I'm hooked. They take some getting used to, but once your over that they pack a great punch to keep you going. Let me know if you'd tried them, and if not, check them out...
Today I did a quick 15 miles just to get the legs going again...felt pretty good. During the ride yesterday we had some good talk about setting up a Xaverian Bros. cycling club/team that could ride together on the weekends, do some charity rides, and maybe even enter a race or two. It's still just an idea, but I think if we get a core group of alumni and friends we could really get it off the ground. We'll see what happens with it, but I think it could work out great. As for the fund-raising, things have leveled off some, but we're oh so close to the halfway point. That's right, the tally stands at $3,105 right now, only $195 away from being over the hump. Hopefully we can get over that mark this week and be in the home stretch towards $6,600.
Roma: So we have this bachelor party for the Murph-dog coming up in LA over Memorial Day weekend and a few months ago I asked the Bob-dog if I could have some of his frequent flyer miles for my ticket out there. Usually he says no problem... Mexico City, London, Rome, our trip to France in 04' and even our honeymoon to Hawaii last year. All on the miles. It was one of the great benefits of Bob-dog's trips to China and Japan, and a great way for me, and then Kelly, to see the world, but he finally said no more. I was cut off. He said he finally wanted to enjoy some of the miles for himself and mom. I guess that's fair, he did earn them. Just for fun I though, I wanted to post a few photos from Rome. The first, taken circa 1971 of the Bob-dog atop St. Peter's Basilica, the second of me, in 2001 when I visited the very same spot. The quality of my shot isn't that good, but it's still pretty cool that we have the same photo just 30 years apart. (as with all the photos here at kn.com, click to enlarge).
