Isn't it amazing how one little post about a football game can elicit such passion and hatred, both on this site and MWPs? You gotta love it. It's just too bad this can't be translated into politics, the environment, and fighting various diseases. But I digress...
Anyway...since we've got such a lively focus going on in regards to the NFL I thought we'd keep it here for another post and see what your thoughts are on this matter. While the Patriots/Redskins issue, and now the subsequent Patriots/Colts match up, has been getting a large amount of coverage in both the local and national press there is another story that's not too far behind. The NFL, overseas.
Last weekend the NFL staged the first regular season game outside of North America. The Giants and Dolphins played on Sunday night at the impressive Wembley Stadium, just north of London. Lately the new commish of the league has expressed more and more interest in having games played outside of the States and perhaps even placing teams in Europe permanently. (Imagine the travel schedule for say a game against the 49'ers!) He's even gone so far as to suggest that the SuperBowl could be played abroad at some point in the near future.
Now I know that many of the leagues prominent and influential owners, who pretty much control the league these days, (ie. Kraft, Jones, Richardson, etc) are in favor of this international expansion and I'm sure they see a financial gain to be made, or else they wouldn't even entertain the idea, but I just don't know if it'll work.
I can understand and appreciate the interest in the NFL by fans from around the world, that's really great, it is. But will all the progress the NFL has made over the past 10 years or so in terms of becoming this countries newest pastime be for not? Don't you think it would get watered down somewhat? I mean look what happened to the NHL, and they just expanded domestically. (much too rapidly and to cities where they shouldn't have, obviously)
I think the NFL could offer TV packages for the European's (Asians, etc) so they can watch the games and follow their favorite teams, etc, etc, but to have teams based there and to move possibly the single biggest one day sporting event in the world, the SuperBowl, to another country, would be a huge mistake on the part of the NFL.
I'd like to know what you, the faithful, think.
Have a great Halloween and be safe out there driving home tonight, watch out for the little goblins! Oh, and if you think you might want to try one of those pumkin spiced lattes from DD today in honor of the day. Don't. They're beyond nasty!
