Over the holiday weekend our town hosted a little 5k Turkey Trot. Since the bike is pretty much winterized at this point I signed up for this about 4 weeks ago figuring it would give me a little motivation to get out and run a few times each week. I said to myself that if I could finish in under 30 minutes I'd be a happy camper, so that's what I set my focus on.
Fast forward to "race day" and I made my way over to the start line not expecting to see so many people. There were about 650-675 who registered! The temps were already into the 50's when the gun went off so you couldn't have asked for better conditions. I started out at a steady pace, trying not to get sucked into the mad rush that happens at the start. I missed the sign for the 1 mile mark so I really wasn't sure how I was doing until I spotted the 2 mile sign and looked down to see I was at 19 mins. I had 11 minutes left to run the final 1.2 miles. Doable. I kicked it up a notch and crossed the line at 28:40! Certianly not a record setting pace, [the winners time was 16:10] but I was happy with the effort and I did what I had set out to do. Ended up finishing in 295th place...so middle of the pack.
[Later found out that my official chip time was 28:38]
I patted myself on the back and made my way home for some breakfast. Not a bad way to start my Saturday morning!
